Looking forward to Wii 2? Don’t hold your breath. Details on Nintendo’s next console, however, do appear to be solidifying. If reports floating around over the last couple of days are to be believed, Nintendo’s next console will be backwards compatible with Wii software, but will feature a wholly new controller rather than an updated Wii-mote. While reports are vague and varied, details such as a device capable of 1080p HD graphics utilizing a controller with a built-in touch screen are the first hints that Nintendo is smart enough to know they must continue innovating, rather than just bank on the Wii’s “expanded audience” to continue their recent success.
While Nintendo will not currently comment on any of this rumor and speculation, if these reports are to be believed at all, we can expect a generic announcement in the near future and full details and demonstrations at E3 2011, with all marketing geared toward a Q4 2012 launch.
