Is it time for the classic RPGs to make a come back? Deus Ex was rather successfully relaunched, Baldur’s Gate‘s being remade and Wasteland is getting a sequel (finally). It only seems right that BioWare and EA announce a new Ultima game.

But it might not be what fans were hoping for.

Ultima Forever is a “cross-platform action RPG” which asks you to “accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land of Britannia. Play as the Fighter or the Mage and travel alone or with friends, restore virtue and become the Avatar!” Huh.

The game is being releasedon iPad and PC under the Free2Play label so, at least, it won’t cost anything to play. Of course Ultima creator Richard Garriott won’t be a part of it as he no longer works for EA and is currently making the Ultima Online spiritual successor New Britannia/Ultimate RPG.

Good thing the game is free, because after the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, I don’t think the portion of butthurt fans are ready to make the leap.
