I bet you didn’t see that one coming; the independently-made game from Mojang and (recently) 4J Studios, Minecraft, has climbed the symbolic Xbox pedestal as the top-played game above even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
At 4 million copies sold, Minecraft has become the top-selling game of XBLA. Microsoft Live’s activity chart managed to calculate what games are being played the most on the Xbox Live services during the week of October 15 and managed to come up with Minecraft being the top game ahead of Modern Warfare 3, FIFA Soccer 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Borderlands 2, Halo: Reach, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 2, Madden NFL 13, and NBA 2K13 (in that order).
I don’t know about others, but I do rather enjoy seeing independent titles make it big in the gaming world every now and then. I won’t say “lesser-known” games because Minecraft is anything but that. Still, it’s rather surprising that it was able to topple some major AAA titles in the category of online play…even if just for now. After all, Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 come out in about a couple weeks. I’m sure they’ll climb up the charts rather fast.
What do you think of Minecraft’s (possibly) momentary victory?
