Square Enix Ltd. announced today that the first title from Square Enix to be featured on the Ouya will be Final Fantasy III.

Final Fantasy III will be a launch title for the when the system launches next March. This version is said to have a free-to-play demo included, updated controller support, and will be fully optimized for the system.

Final Fantasy III was released back in 1990 on the Famicom (NES) in Japan. North America would not see the release of this game until 2006, when it made it’s debut on the Nintendo DS. Final Fantasy III took elements from the previous two games, like the job class system and a group of characters involved in a world-threatening dilemma, and extended upon them. It was also the first game in the series that allowed the use of summons. These game elements would eventually set the stage for how later games in the series would become.

And for those who don’t know, the Ouya is an upcoming video game console that emphasizes on free-to-play games, and is designed to allow outside modding with the hopes of influencing video game development.

Square Enix has stated that Final Fantasy III is not the only title they plan to release for the Ouya, so stay tuned for any future announcements.
